Saint Tikhon, Bishop of Voronezh, Wonderworker of Zadonsk and All Russia (Commemorated on August 13)

Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk, born Timothy Kirillov in 1724, rose from a childhood of deep poverty in the Novgorod diocese to become a renowned Orthodox bishop and spiritual writer. Orphaned young, he worked alongside peasants for bread and pursued religious education through hardship, eventually excelling at the Novgorod Seminary. Tonsured as Tikhon in 1758, he was appointed bishop after a remarkable triple selection by lot. As Bishop of Voronezh, he tirelessly labored to uplift clergy and laity alike—abolishing pagan customs, founding seminaries, writing theological works, and calling pastors to humility, reverence, and love.
Later withdrawing to Zadonsk due to illness, Saint Tikhon became a spiritual father to many, living simply and writing influential texts such as On True Christianity. Known for his humility, love for the poor, and deep contemplative life, he endured suffering with joy and foresaw his own death through visions. He died on Sunday, August 13, 1783, and was canonized in 1861. Revered for his holiness and prophetic insight, Saint Tikhon remains a beacon of pastoral care, monastic piety, and Christian charity.
