Venerable Maximus the Greek (Commemorated on January 21)

Saint Maximus the Greek was born to a wealthy family in Arta (Epiros) and received an exceptional education, studying languages and sciences while traveling through major European centers such as Paris, Florence, and Venice. Returning home, he became a monk at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, where he devoted himself to the study of ancient Byzantine manuscripts. In 1518 he was sent to Moscow at the request of Great Prince Basil III to translate Greek patristic and liturgical texts into Slavonic. Although highly learned, Maximus struggled with Slavonic, leading to minor inaccuracies that later fueled opposition against him, especially under Metropolitan Daniel. His refusal to translate a work containing heretical material and his bold rebuke of the prince’s attempt to divorce his wife led to his imprisonment and years of suffering.

Despite persecution, Saint Maximus remained steadfast, producing theological writings, translations, and a Canon to the Holy Spirit composed while in prison. After years of confinement he was transferred to Tver, and only after two decades was he fully rehabilitated and allowed to live freely at the Trinity-Sergiev Lavra, where he continued translating the Psalter. Worn by hardship but spiritually strong, he reposed on January 21, 1556. He was buried at the Lavra, where his grave became a source of veneration, and the Church later honored him with hymns and icons commemorating his life and witness.

Troparion — Tone 8

Having been made resplendent by the glory of the Spirit, / you were deemed worthy of the wisdom of those who speak with eloquence, and the knowledge of things divine. / Having illumined the hearts of men who were in the darkness of ignorance with the light of piety, / you appeared as a great luminary of Orthodoxy, O Venerable Maximus. / And after leaving your country out of divine zeal, you became a settler in the Russian lands, / where the right hand of the Most High crowned you as you endured fetters and prison, and glorified you with miracles. / Intercede unceasingly for us who, with love, honor your memory.
