Saint Anna of Leukadio - Troparion & Kontakion (Commemorated on July 23)

Saint Anna (Susanna) of Leukadio (or Leukati) was born in Constantinople in 840, during the reign of the iconoclast Emperor Theophilos (829–842). She came from a wealthy and noble family and was blessed with both physical beauty and spiritual depth, having been raised "in the discipline and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).
Following the death of her parents, Anna inherited her father's estate and generously distributed much of it to the poor. A certain Hagarene (Muslim) who lived in Constantinople fell in love with her and sought her hand in marriage. He even gained the support of Emperor Basil I the Macedonian. However, Anna refused his proposal, desiring instead to remain unmarried. Angered by her rejection, the Hagarene harassed her and threatened to take her by force. In her distress, Anna turned to God in fervent prayer, asking for deliverance. God, in His righteousness, answered her plea: the Hagarene was struck down by divine judgment and died.
Around the year 896, Anna entered a church in Constantinople dedicated to the Mother of God. There, she embraced a life of strict asceticism, devoting herself to fasting, vigils, and constant prayer. She lived in this angelic way for fifty years. After a brief illness, she peacefully gave her soul to God.
Years after her repose, her relics were discovered to be incorrupt, whole, and fragrant with a divine scent. Miracles were attributed to her relics: demons were cast out, the blind received sight, and the lame walked—signs of how God glorifies those who glorify Him.
Saint Anna is commemorated in the Menologion of Basil II, and her Life is included in the Synaxaristes of Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain. Although little is known about her later life, she is mentioned in the printed Greek Menaion during the sixth Ode of the Canon at Matins, albeit without a full Synaxarion.
Troparion — Tone 8
By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile, / and your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance. / By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe! / O our holy mother Anna, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!
