Holy Great Prince Vladimir (Basil in Baptism), Equal of the Apostles, and Enlightener of Rus' (Commemorated on July 15)

ree

Saint Vladimir, born in 963, was the youngest son of Prince Svyatoslav of Kiev and grandson of Saint Olga. Raised in a pagan society yet influenced by his Christian mother and grandmother, Vladimir initially ruled as a military leader, uniting and expanding Kievan Rus’. After reclaiming his territory from his brother and strengthening his borders, he embraced paganism deeply, erecting idols and offering sacrifices. However, over time, he was drawn toward Christianity, inspired by stories of faith, divine miracles, and the influence of Orthodox Constantinople. Seeking a unifying faith for his people, he sent envoys abroad to examine world religions. Impressed by the beauty and holiness of the Byzantine Church, he decided to convert.

Vladimir’s baptism in 988 marked the Christianization of Kievan Rus’. According to tradition, he was baptized in Korsun (or possibly at his estate in Vasiliev), and his people were later baptized in the Dnieper River. After embracing the faith, Vladimir ruled with justice and mercy, aiding the poor and sick and replacing the death penalty with fines. He built churches, established Christian education, and sent his sons to govern various cities to unify the land. Saint Vladimir reposed in 1015 and is honored as “Equal of the Apostles,” with his memory celebrated on July 15. His conversion profoundly shaped the religious and cultural identity of Russia.

Troparion — Tone 4

Holy Prince Vladimir, / you were like a merchant in search of fine pearls. / By sending servants to Constantinople for the Orthodox Faith, you found Christ, the priceless pearl. / He appointed you to be another Paul, / washing away in baptism your physical and spiritual blindness. / We celebrate your memory, / asking you to pray for all Orthodox Christians and for us, your spiritual children.

Kontakion — Tone 8

Most glorious Vladimir, in your old age you imitated the great apostle Paul: / He abandoned childish things, while you forsook the idolatry of your youth. / Together with him you reached the fullness of divine wisdom: / You were adorned with the purity of holy baptism. / Now as you stand before Christ our Savior, pray that all Orthodox Christians may be saved.
