Prophet Hosea (Commemorated on October 17)

The Holy Prophet Hosea, the first of the minor prophets, was from the tribe of Issachar and lived in the ninth century before Christ in the kingdom of Israel. A contemporary of Isaiah, Micah, and Amos, he witnessed a time when many Israelites had turned away from the true God to worship idols. Through his teachings and warnings, Hosea called the people back to faith and foretold their coming punishment—captivity by the Assyrians—for their unfaithfulness.
Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Hosea prophesied nearly a thousand years before Christ about the end of sacrificial offerings, the spread of the knowledge of God, and key events in the life of the Savior. He foretold Christ’s return from Egypt, His resurrection on the third day, and His victory over death. His prophecies are preserved in the Book of Hosea. Serving as a prophet for over sixty years, Hosea remained faithful to God’s will until his death in old age.
