Martyr Markella of Chios (Commemorated on July 22)

Saint Markella of Chios lived in the village of Volissos during the late 14th century. Raised in a devout Christian household, she was educated by her father, the village mayor, after her mother’s early death. Known for her piety, humility, and desire to remain pure, she devoted herself to prayer, fasting, and service to others. As she matured, she became beloved for both her spiritual depth and physical beauty. However, her father, overcome by unnatural desires, eventually revealed his intentions, causing Markella to flee in horror. Pursued by him into the wilderness, she sought refuge in prayer until, through divine intervention, a rock miraculously opened to conceal her. Tragically, her father found her and brutally murdered her.
In the years following her martyrdom, Christians built a church near the place of her death, now called "The Martyrdom of Saint Markella." The rock believed to have hidden her still stands, with a small hole from which healing water flows. This water is thought to be miraculous, unaffected by tides and accompanied by visible signs during religious services. Pilgrims from around the world visit the site, where many claim to have experienced healings and divine encounters. The legacy of Saint Markella endures as a symbol of faith, purity, and divine protection.
Troparion — Tone 4
Your lamb Markella calls out to You, O Jesus, in a loud voice: / “I love You, my Bridegroom, and in seeking You I endure suffering. / In Baptism I was crucified so that I might reign in You, / and I died so that I might live with You. / Accept me as a pure sacrifice, / for I have offered myself in love.” / Through her prayers, save our souls, since You are merciful.
