Saint Joanna the Myrrhbearer (Commemorated on June 27)

Saint Joanna the Myrrhbearer

Saint Joanna was the wife of Chuza (Χουζά), the steward of Herod’s household. She faithfully served the Lord during His public ministry, alongside several other devoted women. She is mentioned in the Holy Gospel according to Luke (Luke 8:3; 24:10).

According to Church Tradition, Saint Joanna was the one who recovered the head of Saint John the Baptist after it was discarded by Herodias. This event is commemorated on February 24.

She was also among the holy Myrrh-bearing Women who went to the tomb to anoint the Body of the Lord with myrrh following His crucifixion. There, she received the angelic proclamation of Christ’s All-Glorious Resurrection.

Saint Joanna fell asleep in peace in the first century. The Church commemorates her not only on February 24, but also on the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women.
