Saint Gelasius of Rimet (Commemorated on June 30)

ree

Saint Gelasius served as the abbot (igumen) of the Rimet Monastery in Transylvania. Before taking on this role, he lived as a hermit near the Rimet creek, where he was granted the divine gift of working miracles.

He led a life of strict asceticism, fasting throughout the week and partaking only of the Holy Eucharist on Saturdays and Sundays. During the day, he faithfully performed his monastic duties, and at night he remained in prayerful vigil.

Saint Gelasius was a spiritual guide to many hermits dwelling on Mount Rimet, especially during Great Lent, when he would travel to visit and encourage them. Through his prayers, he healed the sick and delivered those tormented by unclean spirits. One tradition tells of a spring of water that miraculously appeared in response to his prayers.

In his later years, he was ordained a bishop and continued to labor tirelessly for the care of his flock. After a life marked by holiness and dedication, he fell asleep in the Lord.

Saint Gelasius was officially glorified by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1992.

Troparion — Tone 4

In truth you were revealed to your flock as a rule of faith, / an image of humility and a teacher of abstinence; / your humility exalted you; / your poverty enriched you. / Hierarch Father Gelasius, / entreat Christ our God / that our souls may be saved.
