The Nativity of our Most Holy Lady the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary (Commemorated on September 8)

The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary is celebrated by the Church as a profound moment of universal joy, marking the beginning of the fulfillment of God's promise to redeem mankind. At a time when the world was engulfed in deep moral decay and hopelessness, the birth of the Virgin Mary was a divine intervention, offering light in the midst of darkness. Chosen before the ages by Divine Providence, she was born to Righteous Joachim and Anna in Nazareth, a couple advanced in age who remained steadfast in faith despite enduring the sorrow of childlessness. Their unwavering trust in God's mercy was rewarded when the Archangel Gabriel announced that they would bear a daughter, Mary—destined to become the Mother of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Her conception was not only a miracle but also a testimony to God's power to bring forth life and hope against all odds.

Mary's birth ushered in a new era for humanity. She, who surpassed all in purity and virtue—even the angels—was revealed as the living Temple of God, the "East Gate" through which Christ would enter the world. Her coming signaled the imminent fulfillment of the great promises of salvation and the dawn of God's Kingdom on earth—a Kingdom rooted in truth, holiness, and eternal life. As the Theotokos (God-bearer), she stands as a merciful Intercessor for all humanity, a spiritual Mother to whom the faithful turn with trust and devotion. The Church honors her nativity not just as a historical event, but as the beginning of the mystery of the Incarnation, the moment when God’s plan for the redemption of the world took a vital and visible step forward.

Troparion — Tone 4

Your Nativity, O Virgin, / has proclaimed joy to the whole universe! / The Sun of Righteousness,1 Christ our God, / has shone from you, O Theotokos! / By annulling the curse, / He bestowed a blessing. / By destroying death, He has granted us eternal Life.

1 Malachai 4:2

Kontakion — Tone 4

(Original Melody)By your Nativity, O Most Pure Virgin, / Joachim and Anna are freed from barrenness; / Adam and Eve, from the corruption of death. / And we, your people, freed from the guilt of sin, celebrate and sing to you: / “The barren woman gives birth to the Theotokos, the nourisher of our life.”
