Saint Hilarion of Tvali (Commemorated on July 24)

Saint Hilarion of Tvali (Tulashvili) served as the abbot of Khakhuli Monastery in southwestern Georgia at the beginning of the 11th century.
In The Life of George of the Holy Mountain, the writer George the Lesser describes Saint Hilarion as a man of exceptional virtue, renowned for his inspiring sermons and ascetic life.
He played a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual and intellectual formation of the young George of the Holy Mountain, who would go on to become a distinguished writer, translator, theologian, and patriot. It was also under Saint Hilarion’s guidance that George received the blessing to embrace monastic life.
According to the Life of Kartli, Hilarion was not only a revered theologian but also a highly regarded translator and writer.
Later in life, Saint Hilarion relocated from Khakhuli to the Monastery of Tvali, near Antioch, where he spent his remaining years. As recorded by the 19th-century historian and iconographer Michael Sabinin, Saint Hilarion passed away in the year 1041.
Troparion — Tone 8
By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile, / and your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance. / By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe! / O our holy father Hilarion, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!
