Afterfeast of the Transfiguration of our Lord (Commemorated on August 11)
Beloved in Christ,
As we continue through the fifth day of the Afterfeast of the Transfiguration, the Church’s hymns speak to us with profound spiritual urgency. They do not simply commemorate a past event—they call us to participate in it. We are invited to ascend the mountain with Christ, not merely as observers, but as those who are being changed, who are being transfigured.
The hymns urge us to acquire the virtues—to live lives of humility, purity, prayer, and love. Why? So that we may become radiant with the light of Christ, able to stand upon the holy mountain and behold His glory. It is not by our strength, but by grace, that we are drawn into this mystery. And yet, the Church reminds us: this grace meets us in our striving.
The hymns proclaim a promise—those who excel in virtue shall be made worthy of divine glory. This is not reserved for the few or the mighty. It is offered to every heart that longs for God, every soul that says “yes” to Christ in the small, hidden ways of daily faithfulness.
So let us take heart. Let us not grow weary in pursuing virtue. Let us open our hearts to the transforming light of the Lord, that we too may shine with His uncreated light, and reflect His glory into a world that so desperately needs it.
Amen.

Troparion — Tone 7
You were Transfigured on the Mount, O Christ God, / revealing Your glory to Your disciples as far as they could bear it. / Let Your everlasting Light shine upon us sinners! / Through the prayers of the Theotokos, O Giver of Light, glory to You!
Kontakion — Tone 7
On the Mountain You were Transfigured, O Christ God, / and Your disciples beheld Your glory as far as they could see it; / so that when they would behold You crucified, / they would understand that Your suffering was voluntary, / and would proclaim to the world, / that You are truly the Radiance of the Father!
