Martyr Mamas of Caesarea in Cappadocia Commemorated on September 2

ree

Saint Mamas, the Holy Great Martyr, was born in Paphlagonia, Asia Minor, in the 3rd century to devout Christian parents, Theodotus and Rufina, who died in prison for their faith shortly after his birth. A Christian widow named Ammia raised the orphaned child, nurturing him in the faith and encouraging his education. From a young age, Mamas displayed extraordinary wisdom and devotion, converting many of his peers to Christianity. Arrested at fifteen for his faith, he was sent to Emperor Aurelian, who failed to sway him back to paganism. After enduring torture and miraculous deliverance by an angel, Mamas lived ascetically in the wilderness, where he was nourished by wild animals and generously helped the poor with food he prepared.

Eventually arrested again, Saint Mamas continued to demonstrate unwavering faith despite severe torture. Even when thrown to wild beasts, they refused to harm him. Ultimately, he was fatally wounded by a pagan priest and died in a cave outside Caesarea, where he was later buried by Christians. His legacy as a miracle-working saint quickly spread, and many sought his intercession. Saint Basil the Great testified to the widespread veneration of Mamas, calling him a guide, healer, and protector of the faithful.

Troparion — Tone 3

Divine offshoot of the Martyrs, / you followed their steps with longing, / and while proclaiming the Savior's Name, you were marvelous in the contest, / O wise and glorious Mámas; / entreat Christ God to grant us great mercy.

Kontakion — Tone 3

(Podoben: “Today the Virgin...”)With the staff given to you by God, O Saint, / shepherd your people in life-giving pastures, / and crush unseen and fierce enemies beneath the feet of those who praise you; / for all those who are in danger have you as a fervent intercessor, O Mámas.
