Venerable Theoctistus (Commemorated on September 3)

Saint Theoctistus of Palestine was a revered ascetic who lived a life of deep spiritual discipline in the Judean wilderness, specifically in the Wadi Mukellik. Early in his monastic journey, he became the close companion of Saint Euthymius the Great. Their bond was so profound that they were described as living “one soul in two bodies,” united in virtue and holiness. Every year, following the Leave-taking of Theophany, they would retreat into the desert for solitary prayer and ascetic struggle, returning only on Palm Sunday. After five years of such devotion, during one of these retreats, they discovered a large cave in a remote wadi. Believing they were divinely guided, they remained there, living on wild herbs and avoiding contact with the outside world.
However, their lives were not meant to remain hidden. Shepherds from Bethany eventually discovered the two ascetics and spread word of their presence. Drawn by their holiness, many monks and seekers began to visit them, and a monastic community began to form. As more disciples gathered, a lavra was established around the cave church, and Saint Euthymius appointed Theoctistus as its igumen. With wisdom and compassion, Theoctistus guided those who came to him, offering spiritual counsel and healing for their souls. In his old age, he fell seriously ill, and Saint Euthymius, though elderly himself, personally cared for him. Saint Theoctistus passed away in 467, and his funeral was led by Patriarch Anastasius of Jerusalem. He is distinct from Saint Theoctistus of Sicily, commemorated on January 4.
