Righteous Nonna, mother of Saint Gregory the Theologian (Commemorated on August 5)

ree

Saint Nonna, the mother of Saint Gregory the Theologian, was raised in Christian piety and became a model of faith and perseverance. Married to Gregory of Arianzus, a pagan of the Hypsistarii sect, she prayed fervently for his conversion. Her prayers were answered when he had a vision that led him to embrace Christianity. He was baptized, ordained, and eventually became Bishop of Nazianzos, while Nonna was made a deaconess. Throughout her life, she excelled in both piety and household responsibility, uniting her deep devotion to God with charitable works and wise stewardship of her home.

Even in her later years, marked by the sorrow of losing her children, Saint Nonna remained steadfast in faith. Her final days were spent mostly in prayer, and through a vision involving her son, she was temporarily restored to health. After the death of her husband in early 374, she devoted herself entirely to church life and reposed shortly afterward, dying at prayer on August 5, 374. Saint Nonna's life of prayer, charity, and devotion makes her an enduring example and fitting patron for Orthodox women’s organizations.
